About Us

The UCB Story

Universal Carpentry & Building Ltd started up in 2007 and it’s been an exciting venture ever since. From our small beginnings making pieces of furniture in a cold garage and carpentry jobs for local residents, to taking on multiple commercial carpentry & joinery contracts on large, new build and refurbishment projects. We now manufacture, high end, bespoke, hand crafted joinery products in our own workshop. From completion in the workshop we then provide on-site installation for some of the UK’s largest construction companies, interior designers and private residential customers.

Our core beliefs are to deliver exceptional quality and service to our customers. We owe a huge thanks to our regular customers that continue to use our services and we hope you’ll continue to be a part of our story.

Founder of UCB

UCB’s founder, Simon Whitpen, started his career as an apprentice cabinet maker at the age of 16. Alongside his apprenticeship he was a student at Norwich Technical College where he gained City & Guilds NVQ Advanced Level 3 in Furniture Making. Following college, Simon went on to work for various fine furniture makers and joinery companies. Some of the most enjoyable and accomplished work was with one of the world’s leading fine furniture makers, Arthur Brett & Sons, with showrooms worldwide.

As a cabinet maker, Simon’s responsibilities consisted of machining components, manufacturing jigs, making fine furniture, veneering, marquetry and inlays. On-site work included fitting out old, grand buildings with solid wood panelling made in the workshop for secret doors for libraries, stairwells, bars, studies and drawing rooms.

Unexpectedly being made redundant created an opportunity for Simon to use his skills on a self-employed basis, in the commercial building trade, working for various building groups and shop fitting companies.

With over 10 years of experience, a wealth of acquired skills, knowledge and contacts, Simon established Universal Carpentry & Building Ltd in March 2007.
